Amsterdam is the capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a.k.a. Holland. In fact Holland is just part of the Netherlands (compare England, part of the United Kingdom).
The city is lovingly called 'Mokum' by the Dutch or 'The Dam' by visitors from other countries.
